One mark of a good design is how well a boat survives the years. Once the glimmer of new gelcoat fades, most boats join the slush pile of unremarkable fiberglass production boats. You know them, or maybe you don’t, the ABC 30, which looks just like the XYZ 32 in the next slip over, one white plastic boat after another. And while most of these old boats are still good boats, capable of delivering the subtle rewards that only a sailboat can, there is little to distinguish them. The Sabre 38, designed by Roger Hewson and the Sabre Design Team is not one of these easily forgettable boats.

The Sabre 38 is the kind of boat that makes you sigh contentedly when you spy it swinging on a mooring. It just looks right at home in the water. It’s a sailboat with no ulterior motive. When a slight breeze stirs and it swings beam-on you’ll observe that there is just enough sheer to take the modern-look edge off, and the freeboard is proportional to the length overall. As it swings back around you will note the fine entry of the bow and if it comes completely around again, you’ll see the stern with its reverse transom that flows perfectly into the deck line. The cabin trunk is low slung but not excessively angled blending well into the over appearance of the boat while hinting at a generous and comfortable below deck spaces for family and friends to join together after a satisfying day on the water.

OTTER is an excellent example of how a boat like the Sabre 38 ages well. Only three owners since first built (more like two as the most recent change of ownership was between siblings), regular professional care and timely upgrades have done much to keep the years at bay and make her an excellent opportunity for the next generation (or two) of sailors with an eye for what’s right and good in a timeless boat.

The boats in storage here at Brooklin Boat Yard are tightly packed together which does not allow for getting good recent photos. Her owners are searching their files to get some nice shots of the boat on the water and we hope to have them soon. Likewise, we hope to soon have some nice photos of the interior to share with interested parties. As soon as these photos become available, we’ll add them to the listing. Pictures are worth a thousand words but nothing beats seeing something in person so if you’d like to get and up-close and personal look at OTTER give us a call or drop us an email to schedule an appointment.

Of special note: OTTER received significant electronics, mechanical and rigging upgrades between 2014-2016. In the fall of 2016 OTTER was put into (inside) storage here at Brooklin Boat Yard and the boat has remained in storage and under the care of Brooklin Boat Yard since that time.
