Joel White designed the Haven 12 ½ as a centerboard version of the famous Herreshoff 12 ½ footers, one of which he owned for nearly half a century and is still owned by his son Steve White. Because Joel so respected the original design, having sailed his SHADOW in all conditions, he set out to make the Haven perform exactly like the Herreshoff. With a little more beam and slightly filled-out bilges, Joel’s numbers indicated identical stability. Wetted surface remained about the same and the sail plan identical, so it came as no surprise that Joel achieved what he set out to do.

The chief advantage of the Haven over the Herreshoff is, of course, the shallow draft and with it a long straight keel. She’ll float in only a foot and a half of water, where as it takes two and a half feet for the Herreshoff. This opens up more acreage for thin-water sailing, and allows for easy trailering. The deeper keel and wineglass shaped sections of the Herreshoff may make her look more elegant than the Haven when you see them together out of the water, but this is of small concern once they are overboard and the underbodies are hidden below the waves. Then the two are indistinguishable unless you seek out the tell-tale centerboard trunk. They have the same roomy cockpit, comfortable seating and the same exhilarating but safe feeling when the wind breezes up.

The Haven being offered for sale here is the only Haven to have been built by Brooklin Boat Yard and she was originally built for C. Thomas Clagett, Jr a noted yachtsman who was a driving force for the use of yachting and yacht racing as a tool for success and is the namesake for the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta that provides on-water sailing opportunities for disabled persons.
