Mischief 2011

Mischief

Built by Herreshoff Mfg. Co. in 1957, Mischief had been under Bradley family ownership since 1934 and a fixture here at the yard for as long as anyone could remember, so it seemed only fitting that when her owner passed away, Mischief was left to Brooklin Boat Yard with the understanding that she would continue to be maintained and sailed. In August of 2011, work began on what at first was thought to be an extensive refit, but which quickly changed to a full-on restoration led by Brian Larkin who had previously headed up the restoration of Aphrodite.

The work consisted of replacing all of Mischief’s floors and frames, deck beams and deck, cabin and cockpit, chain plates, toe rails, and keel bolts. Her cedar planking was in pretty good shape so most was retained, but both of her varnished oak sheer strakes had to be replaced.

Mischief’s rig had been progressively shortened to make her easier to handle so Brooklin Boat Yard procured the rig from another S-Boat that had been damaged in a fire (the spars were stored elsewhere) so that Mischief could once again carry Herreshoff’s original sail plan.

Nearing the end, Mischief was purchased, and her new owner was able to work with the yard to complete the project. After trials here in Brooklin, Mischief was trucked south to join the large and competitive S-Boat fleet of Newport, RI.
