Tink 2022

Tink is the finest and purest boat I’ve ever sailed. She’s really, really fast. They hit it out of the park.”

Jack Lefort, Tink

Tink

Tink, launched in 2022, synthesizes the traditional look for which Brooklin Boat Yard designs are renowned, combined with thoroughly modern performance and handling. When the client for this build first approached Will Sturdy, principal designer, the brief was simple: he loved the look of the earlier Eggemoggin 47s, but he wanted a boat that would hold its own on the racecourse against modern boats in Narragansett Bay. Will had spent several years racing aboard Lynette, an Eggemoggin 47 launched in 2013, so he had plenty of ideas to do just that!

No part of the original Eggemoggin 47 design was left untouched. The overall proportions of the hull were adjusted to help her handle the windy conditions of Narragansett Bay, and subtle tweaks above the water helped refine her aesthetics and improve seakeeping while retaining the distinctive look of her predecessor. Under the water, the hull was completely reshaped to optimize the careful balance of righting moment, displacement, and drag. Working closely with Ken Read and the engineering teams at North Sails and Hall Spars, the rig and sails were thoroughly optimized for aerodynamic efficiency while keeping the easy handling our daysailers for which our daysailers are known. SDK Engineering was brought into the team to design the keel and rudder, producing a wickedly efficient foil package. Using our in-house structural engineering tools, the wood-composite hull and deck were redesigned to significantly increase stiffness while reducing weight.

Beyond the technical changes, we also reimagined the ergonomics of the deck layout and interior. The large cockpit works equally well for crewed racing and relaxed daysailing with a full electric winch package, plenty of space for crew and guests, and careful layout of all controls for easy access from both in front of and behind the wheel. Increased headroom and a few subtle tweaks make the spartan interior surprisingly comfortable.

This new design, dubbed the Eggemoggin 47+, has exceeded all expectations. Her carefully proportioned hull and deck lines strike a beautiful contrast with her aggressive speed. The performance increase is significant – by rating, Tink is roughly 30 seconds per mile faster than the original 47s - and she has the race results to back it up! But speed can be a knife-edge balance; control is every bit or more important. And she excels in that regard as well, with a wide groove and forgiving handling on all points of sail.

Mostly due to Tink’s performance on the race course during her first season, an almost immediate commission was sold to build another E47+ in 2023. Tink was followed by Harper, the second E47+ to be launched at Brooklin Boat Yard.
