Bequia 2009

Bequia

Larger and more complex than any BBY yacht that came before her, Bequia raised the bar for the yard as well as for Bob Stephens and Paul Waring who, newly independent from BBY, designed her. She filled the building shed, challenged the Travelift, and barely squeezed between the piers of the launching platform. But, wow, what a boat!

Here's a description pulled from the Stephens Waring website:

"Bequia is designed to take her owners and their family across the oceans of the world with grace and comfort. Fully powered sail-handling systems make easy work of setting and furling her generous yawl rig. The charthouse provides a touch of old-world elegance, protecting you from the elements, whether sipping your morning cup of coffee on a nippy northern morning or steering through a white squall. Below, she features such amenities as a gas fireplace and custom-made furniture. Custom features include an anchor deployment system and a fold-down boarding platform, both concealed and hydraulically operated. Since 2009, she’s put many thousands of miles under her keel, fulfilling her owners’ dreams."

Upon reading the book about Joel White, Jes Staley headed for Brooklin where, even though Joel was but a memory, he had confidence that his dream would see fruition. The yard was still there, better than ever with Steve at its helm, and Staley's fellow Bowdoin alumnus Bob Stephens would be heading up the design.

The project went off without a hitch, and Bequia has proven a winner on the racecourse as well as a world class cruising boat on both sides of the Atlantic.

Steve White once mused that Bequia “would have her own history and place in the world.” She's doing just that!
